University of California, Los Angeles is a public university located in Westwood. Though it was founded in 1919 it changed its name to UCLA 8 years. UCLA was founded by the governor of California as a Southern Branch of the University of California. By the 1950s UCLA had achieved a lot of respect, both nationally and internationally, as a research institution, and this is an area that the university still excels in.
UCLA has a generally good reputation nationally and internationally, coming 30th on The Times international league tables and 25th in the US.
UCLA has a diverse student body, with over 90 countries represented and all the states in America. However, the majority of the students still come from California. The university has one of the highest admissions rates in the US, for the graduating class of 2012 around 22% of the applicants were admitted, however over the past three years the admission rates have varied from 22% – 27%.
There is a strong sports program at UCLA with over one hundred championships won. They have a particularly strong golf team, winning the NCAA title in May this year. The university colors are blue and gold.
The university compromises of many schools, offering a wide range of courses for example School of the Arts and Architecture, the School of Theater, Film, and Television and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The University has schools which cater to graduate students, including the School of Education and Information Studies, the School of Public Affairs, the School of Management and the School of Law.
Four alumni of the university have been awarded Nobel prizes there are also two professors who hold the award on staff.
