In the year 1876, the former Governor of California Leland Stanford bought a total of 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito in order to build a country home and soon began to develop the famous Palo Alto Stock Farm. After the death of their only son in the year 1884, the couple decided to memorialize his memory and thus the Stanford University started taking a shape. The first student body comprised of 559 students while the original faculty was 15 and later it grew to 49 in the second year of the college.


Stanford University has well known tradition of nurturing the creativity as well as the artistic life of the students studying here. There are several programs that are all open for the public and this includes the Stanford Lively Arts as well as the Cantor Center that happens to be the university’s world-class museum. Stanford University has a total of 20 sporting clubs and these clubs present the students as well as the members of the faculty to participate in several sporting courses and also enjoy state-of-the-art facilities of recreation. Stanford happens to be a residential university and there are around 6100 undergraduates and about 4300 graduates all residing on the campus.

There are four other schools that present graduate programs in subjects like Education, Business, Law and Medicine.


A total of about 1700 students are admitted every year in the UG department and there are more than 65 programs as well as departments available here offering degrees for graduates. Applicants are asked to be aware of the dates and deadlines and the university also offers a dual plan for the freshmen thus facilitating them a lot. There is the Common Application’s First Year Application that requires personal information like birthplace and date, citizenship, major as well as career interests and family background among others.
