In the year 1876, the former Governor of California Leland Stanford bought a total of 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito in order to build a country home and soon began to develop the famous Palo Alto Stock Farm. After the death of their only son in the year 1884, the couple decided to memorialize his memory and thus the Stanford University started taking a shape. The first student body comprised of 559 students while the original faculty was 15 and later it grew to 49 in the second year of the college.

Stanford University has well known tradition of nurturing the creativity as well as the artistic life of the students studying here.
