Improving Your memory For learning

With so much information to take in, your brain needs to be like a sponge, absorbing all the information that is thrown at it. While some people have a naturally good memory, others need to work to improve it. Here are a few tips to get you going.

You need to prepare yourself before you try to remember anything, just take a few long breaths in and out to clear your mind before you begin.

Different people have different methods of learning, you can find out what style of memory you have by doing a quick Google search for some online tests. When you have found this out, utilize that method and make sure you take every possible opportunity to use it. By using the right technique your brain will remember things better.

You might want to try putting things you have learnt into songs or simple rhymes. It has been proven that many people remember things better when put into a catchy tune or song they already know.

It will be easier for you to remember something if you have an interest in it. If you really hate a subject, try and link it into something that you do like. For example, Geometry may bore you, but if you are a snooker player it can be key, so try working things out from a view of a snooker player, not a mathematician.

Finally, you need to try and link key ideas together. This will improve your memory for a subject and help you set off metal triggers when you are in an exam or writing something. Imagine your brain like a train track; if you want to get from one place to another you need some connecting track linking everything in.

There is a very cool iPhone app that helps to expand working memory. It’s called IQ Boost, and can be found at

Just remember - it won’t help you on the exam if you play it instead of taking notes in class.
