How to Get a Job in College

So maybe beer is a little more expensive than you’d thought, or maybe the coffee from the vending machine doesn’t cut it and you feel a sudden urge to buy from the more expensive store down the road. You’ve come to terms with the fact that, like thousands of other students across the country, you too are in need of…a job.

The first thing you need to think about is how much time you can dedicate to a job. Think about your degree course, if you are a science student, you probably won’t have as much free time as an English student.

Think about your future, are there any jobs available that might be of benefit to a future career? For example a Law student could seek part time work as an office clerk. This would be of more benefit that working in a coffee shop, though a coffee shop job is more traditional and will probably be more flexible, it is something you might want to consider.

Next, consider how far you can travel and what kind of shops there are in that area. How about getting a job at the burger bar down the road? It will be a quick walk after college and you won’t have to get up too early.

The final stage is actually getting the job. For most student jobs, a letter/CV won’t be necessary. You just need the confidence to go in and ask if they have any vacancies. It may be easier to do this before the official start of term, otherwise everyone will be looking for a job at the same time as you.
